Star Trek: The Future Begins

Supposed to be my friend and I will going to watch it in the cinema way back 2009. But since she was too difficult to be with during the air time of the movie, she went ahead leaving me alone inside the cinema house.

Its been 4 years now but still I am craving for more of this sci-fi film. It has a different twist compare to the previous Star Trek Saga films and with the  TV series.

The movie presents how the famous USS Enterprise crew got together. There was a slight change in the beginning. Their future was being altered when the Romulans' Ship attacked and destroyed the US Kelvin.

Due to the attack, James Kirk's future somehow changed. He grew up without knowing his father. On the other planet, the young Spock was ridiculed by his classmates due to the fact that he was a half-breed. After the trouble he went through with the other kid, his father talked to him.

He told to his father the inequalities he had experienced. His father  told him that Vulcans prefer logic than emotion. He emphasized that Spock holds his future.

In this scene, I just remember what our Psychologist Professor used to say that the human behavior is divided into three: id, ego and super ego. The id side is more on the pleasure. The ego is more on the balance of things, normal people could balance the way they think and the way they handle things. While the super ego pertains to logic, the conscience that tells you what is morally wrong and what is morally right.

As their journey continues toward the Vulcan planet, their Captain Pike was taken hostage by the Romulans.  The Vulcan planet was exploded by the vengeance of the Romulans lead by Nero. Conflict then arise between Spock and Kirk.  Kirk was sent to an icy planet. He had been through some mishaps and inside the cave he met the old Spock.

The old Spock told him about their friendship and how George Kirk lived to see the day Jim Kirk became the captain of USS Enterprise. He narrated how he was left their in the first place. He said that if Nero waited for 25 years to catch him. It was only seconds from him to travel in the time warp. Upon entering a star fleet post, Scotty (the physicist) and Kirk transported  to the Enterprise, leaving behind the alien assistant and the old Spock.

Inside the Enterprise, Scotty found himself inside the water tank and Kirk must find a way to get him out of the tank. When Spock found out that Kirk was back inside the Enterprise together with Scotty, he ordered their arrest.  Spock and Kirk had a confrontation where Spock was caught in a emotional compromise that demoted him from being the captain.

Kirk assumed the Captain's seat and they chase after the Romulans' ship and to save Capt. Pike. Spock and Kirk transported inside the Romulan's ship and they started to cooperate with one another. They found the  advance ship (from the future) of Spock. Spock used his ship to attack the enemy and Kirk tried to save Capt. Pike. Battle ensues once they successfully got out of the Romulan ship.

As members of the federation, they offered ceasefire and offered help to the Romulans but the latter refused.  So the Enterprise had no other choice but to fire back.

In the ending credits, the young Spock met the old Spock mistakenly identifying him as his father. The young Spock asked the old Spock why he did not introduced himself to him in the first place. Then the old Spock gently told him that the young Spock and Kirk should know each other to discover an endless friendship they would share. In addition to that, he did not introduced himself to avoid the disturbance in time. Things should happen according to its fate.

I sometimes wonder how it it feels to travel back in time. I wanted to create a time machine that would forbid the ancient civilizations to discover Math. I hate Math! Among all the subjects that we had during our grade school to college days,Math is an exceptional (super to the highest level difficult for me to comprehend)!

But think about it, without numbers what kind of life this civilization would have if our ancestors don't have numbers to begin with?

The Star Trek film shows us that with great ingenuity we could explore space. It reminds me of what Neil Armstrong used to say "It takes small step for a man and a giant leap for mankind."
