Maleficent's Twist of Fate

When I was young I used to read the story about Sleeping Beauty. Among the version of the story I prefer Disney's tell tales. Our Grand Aunt used to narrate the story before bedtime and at times imitating how the characters would react to the situation they are in.

Projecting how Maleficent would deliver her speeches and actions held me at the edge of my bed. Then our Grand Aunt at that time used to laugh at me and says "It is just a story after all, not true". True or not; frightened or not, I enjoyed the story.

So we all grew up knowing Maleficent was the sole villain of the story. The heroine were the three fairy godmothers, Aurora and Prince Philip. In the traditional set-up, out of Maleficent's jealousy of not inviting her in the christening of Princess Aurora,she gate crashed the ceremony and cursed the poor baby.



Meanwhile in the live action movie of Disney, Maleficent was described as both the heroine and the villain who save Aurora from harm. It is said that Aurora's father, Stefan and Maleficent used to have a past. Due to Stefan's hunger of power, he betrayed Maleficent and wed Aurora's mother instead.

Stefan stole Maleficent's wings and gave it to the King, his future father-in-law. However, in the traditional story, no wings have reported to be stolen from the main villain. In the movie, it was presented that Maleficent and her crow, tend to the then young Aurora due to the thee fairies incapacity to look after her.

In the old story, the crow was never transformed into human, whereas in the new film, it was turned into a man named Diaval. Diaval could transform in any shapes and figures whenever Maleficent wave her hand. As a fairy, Maleficent somewhat had an allergy in iron crafts. She had burns whenever she had a contact with irons.

In the latter part, it was not the Prince Philip who broke the spell, it was Maleficent. In the twist of fate, it was Prince Philip who made Princess Aurora awake. Both stories had a different way of telling who shape shifted into a dragon. Of course it was Maleficent's wings who save the day.

Lessons I learned from the movie, that all of us have our kryptonite. Once trust is given, it should be treasured. If it is lost in the process, it may never given back. Hatred will pass as time passes by. Good people should not be made into an enemy because they can unleash the tiger within. Love will find you.  

Angelina Jolie is an magnificent actress, she brought out best and worst of her character. It is up to the viewers to love her or to hate role, as far as the other movie critics are concerned.
