Dinos Theme Park: Not Just Another Science Fiction: Jurassic Park
“Every orchid or rose or lizard or snake is the work of a
dedicated and skilled breeder. There are thousands of people, amateurs and
professionals, who devote their lives to this business. Now imagine what will
happen when the tools of genetic engineering become accessible to these
people.” – Freeman Dyson
“Panonoorin mo yun? Wag na baka matakot ka lang. (You will watch it? Be wary you might be
scared.)”- Former school mate told me
When I was in grade 1, Jurassic Park became so hit! For the
time it was shown in all theaters nationwide, it remains in the front pages of
every newspapers. I was enthralled in this film even screamed so many times
whenever the ferocious lizards would come out and hunt for food. Witnessing how
the scientists joined as a team to bring back this extinct species made me
dream of becoming an archaeologists someday. There was a huge curiosity inside
of me that gave thrills in my nerve to explore the unknown and discover new
artifacts. It made me read books on dinosaurs and how they end up in
extinction. I still recall how my classmates back then would recite like a game
who could enumerate the names of all the giant lizards in the big screen.
However, witnessing how the selfish fatso scientist laid out
his card in the film made me rethink on the conscience of society. On how far
one was to go in exchange of money? If he did not pulled off his tricks the
discoveries would be a success. The ending of the first film led to the series
of sequels in the past years ‘til the fourth film materialize. But if he did
not do it, there will be no story to tell after all.
Let us now embark on a new time line ….. Now that Mother
Nature is facing a great deal of losing some or majority of her creatures on
land, air and water. Science has a say. Through genetic engineering, the future
generations have the opportunity to witness the grandeur of Earth. Since it is
beneficial to preserve and to improve the faults which lies deep within the
cells of every living things. But are all of these make sense?
Freeman Dyson is right, if the invention itself is placed in
the wrong hands what would become of us now? Not long ago, this idea was a mere
myth – product of imagination from the pioneers of genetic engineering. But not anymore. These days genetic cultivation
is at its best. Here and there, universities and laboratories are collaborating
in creating and formulating on something that could alter the DNAs of each
species and even grant life back to the extinct ones. Well, we could almost
imagine to grasp the fulfillment of our endeavors but to what extent? Will
humanity pay the price of these breakthroughs? To alter or not the genes of
species there will always be ethics to consider. Examining the conscience of
those who are partaking in the study, are they doing it to better our lives or
prove something? I or we may not be God to judge them regarding on their stand
as to why they are dwelling so much time in perfecting this cases. Who are we
to judge them after all?
